Day 18

Our building from outside - we were in the basement apartment

Up bright and early for our first day in Washington DC!

White house
We decided to walk to the Mall, the architecture around DuPont circle is gorgeous! We walked along 19th St (our apartment was on 19th) till we reached Pennsylvania Ave – and decided to go past the White House.

Took a few photos and then walked to the Washington Monument (which really is huge!). Then we walked along the Mall till we reached the Air and Space museum. A quick snack stop and then the next few hours were spent enjoying the displays of planes/space shuttles and other great memorabilia!
We went to the museum of the American Indian for lunch – we shared a plate of coloured corn chips and guacamole, buffalo chilli and cheese fries and flat bread with honey and cinnamon.

Then we went to the museum of American history to see Kermit the frog – the girls were sad to hear the ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz are currently on loan to a London museum.

Kermit!
A little bit of present shopping at the museum shop and it was time to walk home. We stopped in a small playground (where Lexie banged her head!) it was so American. It was gated with stone pavers and a small slide and fort. In the middle was a circle of grass covered in fallen leaves. The girls had a ball playing in the leaves!

Then we stopped for a hot chocolate (or in my case a pumpkin spiced latte! Yum!) and walked home. It's great to be within walking distance of everything and such a beautiful neighbourhood. We are all really enjoying the cold weather (about 12 degrees) there are blue skies and no wind - it's lovely.
