Day 19

Another shot of our building

After a slower start this morning we rugged up to take the girls to a local playground. It wasn't actually too cold and the little playground was delightfully American. While there we saw 2 groups arrive – preschoolers maybe? The girls really enjoyed some free play time and then we walked back to the apartment for a cuppa before we started walking to the Lincoln Memorial.

the playground we visited
It was about an hour walk down there but again the architecture (and squirrel spotting) made the time go quickly. The Lincoln Memorial was so impressive! Such a huge statue that seems dwarfed in the giant room he is in. And he has such a great view of the reflective pool, the monument and Capitol hill!
There was mounted police there and the girls got to pat the horses - the police were so friendly they were even tossing a ball around with some kids.

Squirrel!
We saw the Korean war monument and spent some time enjoying the reflective pool as we walked back to the Metro. We caught the Metro (clean! On time!) to Arlington to go to Grandma’s cousin’s house. She has 5 sons who were all there with their wives/girlfriends/children so it was a bustling house! We had BBQ pulled pork, beans, salads and mac and cheese. For desert there were 3 kinds of pie – pecan, apple and my favourite pumpkin!

The girls played with the children and they even learnt how to throw a football the American way!
